Matiwane Forest Restoration Programme
This programme targets the restoration of the degraded and cleared forests of Matiwane, the region between the Mbashe River and Port St Johns in the former Transkei. The degradation and disappearance of these forested areas are the result of poverty-induced activities, especially overgrazing. In most parts, livestock farming is the only option for generating income, and continuing degradation of the environment is causing further impoverishment. Forest restoration has the potential for turning this situation around by creating jobs and providing opportunities for skills development, initially at least through the government’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). The prospect of earning carbon credits on the global carbon market is extremely promising which would mean the generation of earnings to pay for ongoing rehabilitation. Dr Ayanda Sigwela is driving this programme and investigating restoration initiatives in collaboration with local stakeholders and relevant government departments.
